Ion-exchange water softeners all work on the same principle.  Hard water passes through a bed of resin beads, which removes the hardness deposits (calcium and magnisium) by exchanging them with trouble-free sodium ions.   Eventually the resin beads will be saturated with the hardness deposits and the water softener will need to go through a self-cleaning process called a regeneration or recharge.  This means a concentrated brine solution is washed through the resin beads which extracts the hard particles and flushes them to drain and recharges the resin beads with sodium ions preparing the resin beads to create more soft water.
